Last Saturday I went to a wake of our relative in Angel Funeral Home. Since that start of the year, four of my relatives have already passed away. And that is still not the end because, another of our relative is very sick right now and is feared to pass away anytime this year.
As a move around the funeral home, i just can't help but noticed the tradition and beliefs of Filipinos. There are three occasions where there is a reunion. First is during birthdays. This is very common to all since the birth of someone is a blessing and a reunion is always expected. The second event is during weddings. When there is a wedding, many are expected to come and witness the celebration of marriage. The third is during funerals. In our family, we rarely see each other or even talk to each other. I only knew my aunts, uncles and cousins in the first degree. I was shocked to see so many cousins, second, third and even fourth degree.
When there is a funeral it is always accustomed that gambling and drinking of liquor is always present. Having these activities in a wake makes it more merry and nobody wants to sleep. The usual wake would last around 5 days before the dead is brought to its final resting place, the memorial park.
